The Fourth International Conference on Predynastic & Early Dynastic Egypt
July 26-July 30, 2011
Welcome to the website of the Fourth International Conference on Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt. This triennial conference draws together an international group of Egyptologists, archaeologists, and anthropologists who specialize in the origins and formation of the ancient Egyptian state (ca. 4000 – 2680 BCE). The inaugural meeting, entitled Origin of the State: Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt, was held in Kraków, Poland, in 2002. Following the success of the second meeting in Toulouse, France, in 2005, the third meeting was held in 2008 at the British Museum, London.
The fourth meeting of Egypt at Its Origins was hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and held at the Metropolitan Museum on July 26 – 30, 2012. Papers were presented in the Museum’s Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium on July 26, 27, 29, and 30, with excursions to the Brooklyn Museum of Art the afternoon of July 27 and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia on July 28. In addition, a series of posters was available for perusal during the conference in a special exhibition space in the Metropolitan Museum’s Egyptian galleries. Conference participants enjoyed a reception hosted by the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Egyptian Art in The Sackler Wing, which houses the Temple of Dendur, on Friday, July 29.
At the close of the conference the location of the next meeting was announced by Béatrix Midant-Reynes as Cairo, where it is to be hosted by the Institut français d’archéologie orientale in Spring 2014.
Now that Origins 4 is concluded, we look forward to the preparation of the proceedings volume. Announcements and details regarding the proceedings will be posted in the “Proceedings” section of this website for those who registered for the conference and contributed a paper or poster.
The organizers would like to thank and congratulate all the participants for making Origins 4 an exciting and successful conference, and we look forward to seeing you in Cairo in 2014.
